Dear Brecht Families,
It has been a fun and fast summer and I am looking forward to the first day of the 2018-2019 school year on August 27th. I hope that you had a great summer filled with a lot of fun experiences and learning.
Listed below are important dates that I would like to share. Teacher letters to students will be mailed out on Friday, August 10th. This letter will provide you with your child’s teacher assignment. Bus assignments will be mailed separately from our Transportation Department. Incoming Kindergarten Students are invited to come for a bus ride on Wednesday, August 15th at 9:00 a.m. Parents/Guardians will have the opportunity to ride the school bus with their children. New Family Open House is Wednesday, August 15th from 10:00-12:00 p.m. This is an opportunity for new families to participate in self-guided tours of Brecht (maps of the building will be available). This is also a time that you may practice walking your child to his/her classroom in preparation for the first day of school. On the first day of school, students will walk independently to their classrooms. Teachers will assist any students who may need help.
Please note that this year we have changes to the elementary schedule. Manheim Township elementary schools will operate on a 6-day cycle. This means that instead of your child having art on Mondays, your child will have special classes (art, music, physical education and library) on various cycle days, such as day 3. You can keep track of the cycle days and we will notify our school community of cycle days via teacher communication as well as through School Messenger. One of the benefits of cycle days is that students will not miss specials due to not having school on that particular day of the week. If we miss a day of school, school will continue the next day with the next day of the cycle.
On August 23rd, Brecht Teachers will be visiting various locations in the Brecht attendance area. We will be stopping to visit with students and hand out free school supplies. We will be at each stop for approximately 10-15 minutes. Please note the following stops (the times are approximate):
Stop 1: 10:00- Liberty and Charlotte (near Career Link)
Stop 2: 10:25- On Roosevelt, near Glen Moore Circle at the entrance of the Golden Triangle Apartments
Stop 3: 10:50- Stauffer Park (at Toll Gate Lane)
*Even if you don’t need any school supplies, we would love to see your smiling faces!
Please join us at the PTO’s Back to School Ice Cream Social on Wednesday, August 22nd from 6:00-7:00 p.m. This is a great opportunity for your child to see friends and teachers while enjoying some ice cream on the playground at Brecht.
We will open up the school year with an all-school assembly focusing on our school-wide positive behavior support plan, the Bobcat 5: respect, responsibility, kindness, cooperation and excellence. In September, our school community will focus on kindness; cooperation will be our focus for October. I will be talking about the Bobcat 5 at Back to School Night. Back to School Night will be on Wednesday, September 5th. More information regarding Back to School Night will be in your child’s first day packet.
Take a moment to familiarize yourself with the Manheim Township School District website at www.mtwp.net. You will notice user-friendly links on the homepage for parents to find valuable information and resources. Brecht also has it’s own school page which features our school event calendar (including the cycle day), supply lists and newsletter updates throughout the year.
Thank you for reading all of the paperwork that comes home at the beginning of the school year. Please be sure to review the information included in the Elementary Handbook that will come home in the first day packet. Save this handbook for reference through the year! Thank you for your diligence in returning the beginning of the school year paperwork as soon as possible.
Attached to this letter are Manheim Township School District’s Attendance Guidelines and some frequently asked questions. It is important that you review and abide by these guidelines for your student’s attendance. We know there is a direct connection between students’ attendance and their achievement.
Please sign up on Brecht’s PTO website (https://brechtpto.wordpress.com) to receive important Bobcat Blasts and school information. The first PTO meeting will be on September 18th at 6:30 p.m. Plan on becoming an active member of our PTO. We need everyone’s support to provide all of the great activities the PTO has planned for our school community. Childcare will be provided at our PTO meetings, so please join us!
If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me. Welcome to the 2018-2019 school year! It is an honor and privilege to be a part of your child’s educational journey.
Thank you for your partnership.
Sharon R. Schaefer, Principal
