Home and School Visitor/Homeless Liaison

A Home and School Visitor serves as a vital link among the home, school, and community. Manheim Township School District currently employs one Home and School Visitor, who also serves as the Homeless Liaison.

The primary role of the Home and School Visitor is to help families access school and community resources such as:

  • Basic economic needs
  • Free/reduced lunch forms
  • Dental and vision referrals
  • CHIP and MA applications
  • Agency referrals
  • Assistance to those who are, or may soon be homeless
  • Food and clothing
  • Crisis Intervention
  • Home visits as needed

McKinney-Vento Act

Homelessness is defined as a lacking a fixed, regular and adequate nighttime residence. McKinney-Vento defines homeless as:

  • Living in shelters or transitional housing
  • Living in cars, parks or substandard housing
  • Sharing the housing of others due to loss of housing or economic hardship (Doubled-Up)
  • Living in hotels/motels or campgrounds
  • Migrant youth who are living in the above situations
  • Unsheltered

As part of the McKinney-Vento Act, homeless students:

  • Receive a free, appropriate public education
  • Enroll in school immediately and attend classes while the school gathers required documents
  • Enroll in the local school where they are living or remain in their original school
  • Receive transportation to their original school, if requested
  • Receive comparable services as housed students, including special education services
  • Receive free lunch
  • Categorically eligible for services such as Head Start and Title One services
  • Right to Dispute
