New State Notification Requirement

Earlier this year, Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro signed Act 44, a new state law that updates how schools communicate following certain safety-related incidents involving weapons or look-alike weapons. This new law requires schools to notify families and staff within 24 hours if a student is found in possession of any weapon at school, during a school-sponsored activity, or on school transportation.

Act 44 requirements will result in more frequent notifications, even in cases that do not pose an active safety threat to our schools. This does not mean there is any increased danger in our schools.

In addition, we have four school buildings that share one campus, this means that if an incident occurs at any of our buildings, families and staff across the district may receive a notification – even if there is no direct impact on a specific classroom or building. In those rare situations, the information shared may be limited, as state and federal laws require us to protect the privacy of any students involved.

Student safety is our number one priority. Our district has strong, well-established safety protocols in place to prevent incidents and to respond quickly and appropriately if concerns arise.

If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact your building principal.

Sincerely,

Dr. Caroline Pate-Hefty
Superintendent
