Nitrauer Elementary Project – Frequently Asked Questions
This FAQ is intended to help families and community members better understand the Nitrauer Elementary School facilities planning process, the options under consideration, and the next steps.
Why is the district evaluating Nitrauer Elementary School?
Nitrauer Elementary includes portions of the building that date back to 1965, with additions completed in 1967, 1990, and 2012. While the building has been well maintained and reflects a strong history of care, several building systems and site features are nearing or beyond their expected lifespan. In addition, the current layout presents educational, accessibility, safety, and traffic-flow challenges that limit flexibility and future readiness.
What challenges have been identified with the current facility?
Key challenges identified through the building evaluation include:
- Aging mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems
- Limited humidity control and outdated lighting and AV systems
- ADA accessibility deficiencies, including restrooms
- Safety and security features that are minimal by today’s standards
- Classroom sizes and layouts that limit flexible, student-centered instruction
- Traffic congestion for buses and car drop-off
- Limited restroom capacity and support spaces
- A site layout that separates playgrounds, fields, and learning spaces
What guiding priorities are shaping this project?
The district is using a priority-based planning approach to guide decision-making. Non-negotiable priorities include:
- Student and staff safety and security
- Equity of programs across elementary schools
- Addressing aging infrastructure responsibly
- Healthy, future-ready learning environments
- Fiscal responsibility
- Capacity planning for enrollment growth
Additional priorities include minimizing disruption to students during construction, improving traffic flow, incorporating flexible learning spaces, and considering sustainability where feasible.
What options are being considered?
Three broad categories of options are under review:
1. Renovation Option A
- Renovates and alters the existing building
- Adds new construction while preserving portions of the current structure
- Maintains some of the existing character of the school
- May result in longer construction timelines due to phased work
2. Renovation Option B
- Includes more extensive renovations and new construction
- Introduces a two-story design
- Addresses circulation and space challenges, but raised concerns about travel distances and layout which the design team will review in a future updated design.
3. New Building Option
- Constructs a new building outside the existing footprint
- Allows for a more efficient, modern, and flexible design
- Reconfigures the site to improve safety and traffic flow
- Would likely result in the shortest overall construction timeline
Why is a two-story building being considered?
A two-story design allows the district to better use the available site while preserving outdoor spaces such as playgrounds and fields. It can also support improved organization of classrooms and shared learning areas. Accessibility, including elevator access and ADA compliance, is a required component of any two-story option.
Will the building be ADA compliant?
Yes. Any renovation or new construction option will fully address ADA requirements. This includes accessible classrooms, restrooms, elevators (if applicable), and support spaces such as OT/PT rooms located close together to best serve students.
What about safety and security improvements?
Safety is a non-negotiable priority. The district is evaluating enhancements such as:
- Improved building layouts for visibility and supervision
- Secure entrances and internal separation of public and instructional spaces
- Updated hallway and classroom safety features
- Coordination with district safety leadership and local law enforcement
Will there still be large gathering spaces like an auditorium?
Community feedback strongly emphasized the importance of a large gathering space for assemblies, performances, and community events. Options are being explored, including a gymnasium with a stage and other flexible solutions, to ensure this need is addressed.
How will construction impact students currently attending Nitrauer?
Minimizing disruption to students is a key priority. If renovations are selected, construction would need to occur in phases with a longer construction timeline to accommodate the students attending the existing school. A new building construction will reduce the disruption to learning while the length of the construction timeline.
How does enrollment growth factor into this project?
The district is considering current enrollment, projected growth, and long-term demographic trends. Any option will account for appropriate capacity, future flexibility, and the ability to adapt as the community grows.
Are sustainability features being considered?
Yes. Sustainability strategies such as energy-efficient systems, solar, or geothermal options are being explored at a feasibility level, with careful consideration of long-term return on investment.
What is the project timeline?
The facilities planning process spans approximately six months. Key upcoming milestones include:
- February 3, 2026: Steering Committee meeting
- February 5, 2026: Facilities Committee meeting
- February 19, 2026: School Board meeting to review options, cost estimates, and recommendations, with a potential vote
How can families and community members stay informed?
Updates will continue to be shared through district communications, the website, and School Board meetings. Community feedback remains an important part of the process as the district works toward a solution that best supports students, staff, and the broader Manheim Township community. Questions and comments can be shared at nitrauerproject@mtwp.net.
